The holiday season is in fully swing, a time to unwind, relax and switch off from everyday life. Unlike my colleague, for me, as a gadget-obsessed technology PR that means leaving my beloved smart devices behind and taking a break from anything technical not only to clear my mind but mainly to prove to my husband that I can actually survive a whole week without Facebook, Twitter and various tacky online news sites.
However, according to a recent report in The Daily Telegraph it would seem that I’m in the minority, with 90 per cent of British holidaymakers now spending up to four hours a day on their smart phones, tablets and other devices. The survey from lastminute.com also revealed that 27 per cent refuse to stay in hotels that don’t offer free WiFi.
So perhaps the launch of the world’s first Twitter hotel – @SolWaveHouse isn’t such a crazy idea after all. To be found on the beach in Magaluf, Majorca, the hotel features a range of ‘twitter-themed rooms’ and offers social media aficionados check-ins, room service and special offers via hash tags.
On arrival, guests are greeted by an online concierge and are given access to an exclusive Twitter app which invites them to interact with and get to know the other guests. Drinks and food can be ordered as you relax by the pool simply by tweeting your order.
I think it’s an inspired idea and using Twitter in a really innovative way and I love the idea of being able to order a drink without having to lift a foot off my sun lounger! Anyone fancy a trip to Magaluf?
