It’s been a while since we’ve highlighted one of our favourite PR stunts on this blog, and with the Premiership title the talk of the North West, we felt this one was definitely worth a mention as it’s both brilliant and highly topical.
As a B2B PR agency based near Manchester, tensions have been running high of late as one half of the city lick their wounds after a disastrous season, while for the other half are still very much in the title race. And then of course there are our neighbours in Liverpool who still also still fancy their chances.
Not one to miss to an opportunity to capitalise on a hotly contested sporting event or shy away from a sore topic for some, Irish bookmaker Paddy Power erected a statue of ex-Manchester Utd boss, David Moyes outside Anfield on Sunday with a cheeky plinth reading: “For services to Liverpool Football Club.”
The status was erected in advance of Liverpool’s match against Chelsea which would have seen the Merseyside team in touching distance of the Premiership title if they had won.
Paddy Power is well known for its high profile stunts having recently put an Alex Ferguson mannequin in a glass box with instructions to only break the glass in an emergency as well as sending a fan dressed as the Grim Reaper into the crowd at Goodison Park to suggest the end was nigh for David Moyles……how right they were!
