Ultra super-fast broadband is coming to Manchester. Virgin Media yesterday announced that ‘Project Lightening’ will see Manchester unveiled as the first city in the UK to benefit from its ultra-fast connectivity.
Over 150,000 homes and businesses across the city will eventually be on the receiving end of speeds of up to 152MB, which Virgin claims are double that currently on offer by its competitors.
Eventually, Virgin plans to rollout connectivity across the UK to four million premises at a cost of £3bn in what it claims is the single largest investment in the UK’s broadband infrastructure for over ten years.
Obviously this is great news for Manchester and will undoubtedly attract new business to the city, but I was equally impressed by Virgin’s launch campaign which saw the comms giant set up a ‘High Speed Selfie’ booth in the centre of Manchester. Visitors to the booth are subjected to photographs taken at g-force speeds. Girls Aloud singer, Sarah Harding was one of the booth’s first victims. You can see her ‘high speed selfie here.
We love a photo booth here at Skout and we are often the first to delve in the props box at awards ceremonies to dress up with wigs, comedy specs, a horse head, top hat etc and pose for a good photo session. So, it’s lucky for Virgin that their high speed booth is only in town for a couple of days and the Skout team is far too busy to experience the high speed selfie for ourselves. No-one else would have got a look in!
