Social media 101

It can often be difficult to keep up to speed with social media. Just as you think you’ve got your head around one new way of communicating with your target audience, another one raises its head. Suddenly there’s a host of platforms to use as a communications tools, all screaming at you to use them as ‘the most effective way’ of engaging with your target audiences!

So let’s see if there’s a simple way to explain the differences between these platforms…

This ‘doughnut’ description has been doing the rounds for ages and if you haven’t already seen it, I think it’s a genius way of explaining social media in the simplest possible terms:

Twitter – I am eating a doughnut

Facebook – I love doughnuts

FourSquare – This is where I eat doughnuts

Instagram – Here’s a vintage photo of a doughnut

YouTube – Here I am eating my doughnut

LinkedIn – My skills include doughnut eating

Pinterest – Here’s a doughnut recipe

Last.FM – Now listening to doughnuts

Who knew it could be so simple? So next time you need to explain the difference between various social media platforms to someone, just tell them about ‘the doughnut’ and it will all become clear.
